The holly is a short native evergreen tree, to 10m, which often formed the shrubby lower layer in the ancient oak forests of Ireland. Its trademark red berries (which only appear on the female plants of this dioecious species) remain on the tree through the winter, and are an important food source for birds at this time of year. Holly has also been used as winter fodder for animals, while its hard white wood had many uses, including being used historically to make the white pieces for chess!
